Margaret Shultz Paterson

Margaret “Peg, Peggy, Mom, Mama, Mom-Mom, Grammy” Shultz Paterson, 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on July 1, 2022, at her residence at Edenwald retirement community. Born on June 7, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Sherman Walleigh and Anne Neely Shultz of Philadelphia. Peg was also the loving sister of Nancy S. Stryker of Cape Coral, Fl. She was predeceased by her husband James (Jim) G. Paterson Sr. who passed away in 1997. Peg attended Penn State University where she received a degree in education. She was a dedicated science teacher and had a natural curiosity about the world around her. Peg had a passion of celebrating and thinking of others through cards. This passion came from her mother and is now being carried on by her own family. Peg loved sports and enjoyed watching the Orioles, Ravens and especially Penn State. Her strong love for music started around age 12 when she began to play the cello. In her later years, she returned to play the cello and played in three different community orchestras. In addition, she became an avid crafter creating her own wood designs and attending craft shows. Finally, in addition to her love for family, science, and music, she was firmly rooted in her faith. She has been a member of Ashland Presbyterian Church since 1966 where her servant heart flourished in many areas particularly congregational care and special music. All that knew Peg will be ever touched by her counsel, grace and unconditional love. Peg met her late husband, Jim, at Penn State and they were married in 1953. Peg is survived by her 3 children, Susan (Paterson) Shunkwiler and husband Bob of Westminster, MD, James Paterson, Jr. and wife Andrea of Lancaster, PA, and Meg (Paterson) Williams and husband John of Roswell, GA. In addition, she is survived by 11 grandchildren, Vicky and husband Tim, Becca and husband Tom, Hannah, Delaney, Caitlin, William, Abbigail, Madelyn, Aiden, Henry, and Mary and 3 great grandchildren, Simon, Patrick and Charlotte as well as nieces and nephews, Paul, Karl, Mark and Anne and their families. Peg loved her family and friends dearly. A memorial service and light reception will be held on August 6, 2022, at 11 am at Ashland Presbyterian Church, 116 Ashland Road, Hunt Valley MD 21030. The internment will be private at another time. Those desiring, may make contributions in her name to the special music fund at Ashland Presbyterian Church or to the Sandra and Malcom Berman Cancer Institute at Greater Baltimore Medical Center.
