Jane Aurell Croft

Born on August 17, 1938, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jane Aurell Croft passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children, on February 13, 2024. Daughter of Maxine & George Aurell, Jane was a beautiful soul with a gift for making and keeping friends, bringing people together, and adding the perfect balance of humor and compassion to every situation. Jane's was a life very well-lived. Jane’s greatest love was for her family, and her whole world revolved around them. She is survived by L. Gordon Croft, the love of her life for 62 years; daughter Carol (Croft) Linde and husband, Doug; sons, Kent Croft and wife, Nancy, and Russell Croft and wife, Ericka, and her nine grandchildren who filled her life with laughter, pride, and plenty of action: Kate, Maddie, & Sam Linde; Dylan & Eliza Croft; and Shapard, George, Blake & Tennybelle Croft. Their beloved “Grammy” was a constant, supportive presence in their lives, and her legacy of joy, inclusion, and generosity of spirit will live on in each of them. Jane grew up all over the world, as the daughter of a CIA Army Colonel—primarily in Japan, Thailand, and the Philippines. She was a proud graduate and ardent supporter of Randolph Macon Women’s College in Virginia. The friendships she made in Lynchburg enriched her life beyond measure and have flourished for more than sixty years. Upon graduation, she worked abroad for Radio Free Europe, married Gordon in 1962, and they built their life together in Baltimore for six decades. Lovingly referred to as “Saint Jane” by many of her husband’s friends, Jane had a knack for making people feel at-ease and like “one of her own.” Her infectious laugh, sparkling blue eyes, and approachable, easy-going manner drew friends from far and wide. While Jane was a leader in many of her beloved charitable organizations, her best days were spent with her family, friends and dogs. Highlights include gatherings with her cherished Book Club, trips with family in Rehoboth Beach, and just sitting on the couch, enjoying life with her beloved pups. Traveling to her home in Italy several times a year, Civita di Bagnoregio was truly her second hometown. Jane was an adored member of the community in Civita, had crafted friendships that became family, and loved sharing this special place with her family and friends. Jane’s abundant generosity and genuine kindness knew no bounds. Jane is also survived by her brother, John Karl Aurell and wife, Jane, and niece, Jane Aurell Menton and family of Tallahassee, FL; “chosen sister”, Dana Redmond and husband, Jim, of Lynchburg, VA; and her well-loved, black lab, Nelly. Memorial services for Jane will be held at 1pm on Monday, February 26, 2024 at The Church of the Redeemer, 5603 N. Charles St, Baltimore.
