Carol T. Bovaird

Carol Tooraen Bovaird, 79, passed away on December 23rd, under the amazing care of Heartlands Assisted Living in Severna Park. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, she was the daughter of Joyce and John Toorean and the sister of Lynda, Kathey and Bobby. She graduated from Our Lady of Holy Cross College in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in education. Upon graduation, she entered the religious congregation of Marianites of Holy Cross and spent six years serving as a teacher and social services provider to residents of New Orleans. Following her religious service, she worked as a first grade teacher, a community organizer with seniors, an activities director, a florist, a cook and a case worker at a community health center. She was also an active volunteer serving as the president of her community garden club, a foster parent for infants through Catholic Charities, and a hurricane recovery volunteer immediately following Katrina. In 1982, she joined her family to relocate to Baltimore. She was happy to find a home with a French Quarter balcony in Maryland. The balconies in New Orleans, especially in the French Quarter, are famous for their ornate wrought-iron railings, often called galleries, which feature intricate floral designs. In the early 90’s she was invited to join a community bible study. Her spiritual journey began a deeper path due to those relationships and their inspiration. In 2018, she joined her daughter’s family living in Odenton and soon became a member of the MACC - the music and Christian fellowship was where she found refuge from her struggles with Parkinson’s. Carol was known for her warmth, her laughter, her caring for others and her commitment to her values. She had a deep love for her family, especially her grandchildren. She found joy in searching for new recipes, listening to music, praying with her house church, beach trips to Ocean City, tending to her beautiful garden, and eating ice cream. Carol is survived by her daughter Becky, son-in-law Linwood, son Brian and daughter in-law Erica, sisters Kathey and Lynda, and grandchildren Annabel, Elijah, Sawyer and Emma. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Parkinson's Foundation, or that you honor Carol with a meaningful action—calling a loved one, spending time outside, writing in a journal or volunteering for your community
