Alexander G. Fisher

Alexander Griswold Fisher, a Baltimore investment and wealth-management executive who had a long career in the city's financial world, died Monday, July 13, of metastatic prostate cancer at the Gilchrist Center in Towson. He was 79 and lived in Timonium. Born in Baltimore on April 19, 1947, he was the son of Louis McLane Fisher, an architect, and Betty Griswold Fisher, a wildfowl artist and cattlewoman, and was a descendant of Alexander Brown, who in 1800 founded Alex. Brown & Sons, the first investment bank in the United States. A 1965 graduate of the Gilman School, Mr. Fisher earned a Bachelor of Science with distinction in finance from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia. Before beginning his career, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1967 to 1970, and for meritorious service during the Vietnam War he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Mr. Fisher spent half a century in Baltimore's investment community, holding senior roles at Mercantile Bank, including vice chairman of its wealth management division, serving as president of Chapin, Davis & Company, and co-founding Archstone Portfolio Solutions. He finished his career as a managing partner of Marquette Associates, from which he retired in 2023. In his later years he turned his attention to urban agriculture, co-founding and leading the BMoreAg Foundation and CEA Funding LLC, an effort aimed at combating Baltimore's food deserts. Mr. Fisher gave generously of his time to the institutions of his native city. He served as a trustee and president of the Maryland Center for History and Culture and as a trustee and vice chairman of the Baltimore Tree Trust. A devoted member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, he chaired its stewardship and investment committees. A service celebrating his life will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, August 7, at The Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore. Mr. Fisher is survived by his wife, Laura Lee “Laurie” Fisher; two daughters, Elizabeth and Catherine; two sons, McLane (Jill) and Davis (Jenna); and four grandchildren, Josephine, Georgia, Jack and Harrison. He is also survived by his brother D.K. Este Fisher III (Pamela) and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Alex’s memory to Backyard Basecamp or The Baltimore Tree Trust, two non-profits that were important to him.
